For Manny Pacquiao, Dec. 8 was a nightmare ending to a long fairy tale. For Juan Manuel Marquez, Dec. 8 was a fairy tale ending to a long nightmare. It was an ending written out with one tremendous right hand.
Pacquiao has been boxing’s happy, innocent warrior, its smiling, bouncing ball of lightning. Marquez has been boxing’s surly brainiac, prone to whining about slights big and small. They have fought each other so well four times now because of the ways in which they are different: Pacquiao’s natural speed, power and aggression mixes well with Marquez’s calculating, clinical knack for timing and counterpunching. It’s not nearly that neat, of course, because Pacquaio has become more like Marquez in the ring over time, evolving into a smarter, more versatile fighter. Nor is he a total choir boy; his recent conversion to devout religiosity came only after some philandering, gambling and other sins. Marquez, once maligned as boring, has slowly turned into one of boxing’s most reliable action heroes, and he eventually has been rewarded with popularity and the good times that come with that.
But fighting Pacquiao was indeed a recurring nightmare for Marquez. No matter what he did, no matter how much better he fought Pacquiao in three meetings from featherweight to welterweight, he couldn’t get the win. By the end of the third one last year, he was so disdainful of the whole ordeal that he conducted a post-fight interview on HBO naked except for a sombrero over his junk. Pacquiao, meanwhile, had to revel in each escape.
All of this background is necessary because knockouts like the one Marquez would author grow richer and more dramatic in full context. There would be no revelry from Pacquiao this time, and no escape. After a hot start, Pacquaio got dropped in the 3rd round, ample evidence that Marquez would once more mount a serious challenge. Pacquiao almost escaped in the 5th after dropping Marquez and then pounding his nose bloody and leaving his knees stiff, almost finishing the bout.
After another 2:59 worth of excellence from Pacquiao in the 6th, disaster struck – or, if you’re Marquez, long awaited vengeance arrived. Pacquiao lunged forward for one final attack, but Marquez saw it developing and was already throwing his own punch by the time Pacquiao was cocking his left. The moment of impact was the kind of pure moment that only boxing can deliver: pure perfection, pure destructiveness, all wrapped into one split second of instant, shocking victory.
The imagery afterward was horrific, for Pacquiao fans. The unconscious, face-down Pacquaiao’s chest heaved, his wife cried hysterically and more than a few wondered if Pacquiao was actually dead. Marquez celebrated the thing he has wanted more than any other: a win over his greatest rival.
Perhaps the fairy tale/nightmare dynamic as it looks now is a false narrative. Pacquiao could yet write another happy chapter in his career, in an era that he has co-ruled with Floyd Mayweather. Marquez’s affiliations with a former BALCO chemist already tarnishes his fairy tale for some, and maybe some revelation will turn suspicion into proof. We might view what happened in Marquez-Pacquiao 4 differently later. But there should be no doubt of its import. Immediately, it turned into a rare pop culture moment for the sport as a whole, from Mitt Romney's face ringside to Justin Bieber populating Instagram with memes about it and risking a ban from the Philippines. And at the conclusion of 2012, it is the Knockout of the Year, a moment that will be talked about for generations, one way or another.

"you can/t win em all"... its just that he just become careless such that he was hit by a perfect punch by Marquez... its a dream come true for the sour grapes Juan Manuel Marquez... Pacquiao can take marquez every punched the only difference was marquez step on pacquiao's foot with that punched thats why it has so much of impact, it was also the lead foot of Pacquiao, just imagine let say someone step on your foot and push you you gonna be out of balance or fall flat, what happened there was pacquiao got punch thats why it has lot of impact and got knock out!!!!!

No sane man will sacrifice his life, his dignity, reputation as a true champion and accept a humiliating defeat like that only to lose the respect and recognition and fuure higher prize afforded to him if he win the fight. Manny is not insane like what you think, that he is Acting? Just to tell you that Marquez really was better fighter between the two during that fight, period!

As what I've heard, Vargas was found doping in his fight against ODLH, yet the latter whooped his ass . While Margarito pounded and KOed Cotto (at his prime) with the Plaster in Paris padded fist.
The 6th round KO (though how serious the way it looked was shocking) did not surprise me because the momentum and timing was there. BUT..the 3rd round one- punch KD? GEEZ!...how many times have we seen Pacquiao hit by Marquez and by much bigger, heavier and harder boxer/puncher (like Cotto, Mosely, Margarito, Clottey etc.) but had walked through that kind of punch?
There's no way Marquez could hurt Pacquiao with that kind of punch (in the 3rd rd) , unless, he had a sledge hammer fist courtesy of Plaster of Paris.
Hiring the dope guru Heredia was more of a ploy to divert team pacquiao's attention from Marquez's new found lethal weapon (the sledge hammer fist) in Plaster of Paris.

He really did work out so hard to perfect the timing to make manny off balance again, by stepping again manny's foot at the right timing ultimately lauched the counter right as he was falling forward. See the replay, as marquez said he was waiting for that perfect timing, practicing so hard, waiting for that moment (to step on mannys right foot). He did that so manny times in pm3 but this time cought manny off guard and was really careless. Im sure manny will bounce back and will be stupid for marquez to accept the 5th fight for marquez knew he was loosing , cant breath right becouse of the blood in his nose, and knows his gonna be brutally destroyed by manny. He wont allow manny to take away the glory he has now...

Don't be a fool. I'm Filipino too. Trying to make excuses for Pac's loss just makes us Pacfans stupid. Show some integrity be a man like the Pacman and accept defeat. Pacman has no excuse. And for that stepping thing, it happens a lot when it comes to lefty vs righty. Even Pac does that sometimes and there's a video of it too. Seriously don't embarass Filipinos or Pacfans. Marquez breathed boxing and harnessed his skills since 2005 just for Pacquiao. Give respect to where it's due. Even though Pac was winning, Marquez just had the perfect punch.

Marquez hit Manny with the same punch probably a 100 times during their 36 rounds fight, but he cannot put Manny down or hurt him. In short Marquez did not have that power for the last 8 years that he fought Manny Why is it that after hiring Memo Heredia, Marquez all of a sudden acquired that power in 4 months? It is obvious that Memo Heredia put something in Marquez system. At 39 years old, Marquez power should be on the decline, but the power increased 3 times. Freddie was skeptic about Marquez bulk which Freddie said was "unnatural" Freddie suggested a VADA testing but nobody listened to him. Now, look what happened to poor Manny. He almost got killed by a cheater. It is unfair to Manny.

It has been the habit of Pacman as I have observed lately, launching an attack everytime a round is almost to end. He was doing this to convince the Judges to favor him in the scorecard and nothing else but for sure.... The world saw this act on the last seconds of the sixth against Marquez. It was an act with a double purpose. First, it was an attempt for a final " Kill" and secondly, a gesture to win the round convincingly as I have said. Nacho and Marquez took note of this habit and had burned their midnight candles studying all these possibilities of "When " Pacman is prone for a hit. And they were right on their plan to execute such historical attack . Their long time cherished dream and struggles were all paid off after it hits the target perfectly as planned. It was a big impact that shocked the planet., but I am optimistic though that Pacman could still recover and bounce back out of this tragic event, He is a kind of guy as we saw it, who accepts positively his mistakes and sets fire inside of him to beat more challenges that may come on his way. The blow was viewed fatal by observers that could put an end for any high caliber fighter. But Pacman was still all smile when he regained his senses. What does this mean?? Expect and watch out for more glories in his name folks!!!

Im an expert.. i saw that manny let marquez punch him...i noticed that becoz he came forward with his right hand down & pumping downwards.....and if you watch it in super slowmo he really d'dnt smash his face first on the canvas ...you will see that his gloves supporting the fall .....but everybody will not notice that bcoz he really act perfectlly!

cmon now... i just watched it like 20 times over again in HD slo motion from 3 differnt angles.. theres no way he was faking being KO'd that punch landed HARD and snapped his head back u could see top of his spin cracking back.. BUT... im not saying he didn't purposely let him hit him tho.. i really don't understand how any professional boxer would make that bad of a mistake.. any body with half a brain coulda read what he was about to do.. he made it SUPER obvious and it seems they had that planned for the last few seconds and marquez was just waiting for the signal lol.. we'll never know for sure tho.. :D

It was really a Knockout of the Year, the same knockout that Manny did to Hatton. We pity Manny for what happened to him, and nobody exected a dreadful and shocking loss for Manny like that, being a true champion. It was a reminder to all of us that even if we are winning in boxing, the same way we are getting richer in life throughout the years, God can take that blessings he give us in split second. We owe to God our dear life, and thank Gode Manny is alive, and I believe he will come back only if he leaves his political and entertainment business temporarily. If not, the nexyt will be more shocking which we do not want to happen to him. We love you, Manny.

Not sure where this idea that Pacquiao was dead is coming from. I don't think I've ever heard of a guy one punch KILLING someone in the ring, unless you're Ivan Drago. That would be a sure sign of something fishy to me. Pretty sure the shock of seeing Manny in such a state was causing people to get a little hyperbolic.
